Kayla 's actions
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 120 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 10 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 20 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 25 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kayla Szumski 4/30/2020 11:54 AMone of my favorite ecotips is to purchase package free shampoo and conditioner as well as soap! Naples soap company offers a wide selection but they can be found all over. It is a simple way to minimize the amount of plastic and waste in your household! -
Kayla Szumski 4/20/2020 3:33 PMOne of favorite ways of being more environmentally friendly is by using reusable bags when shopping. To do this I purchased several cloth bags to replace plastic or paper bags at the store. I also took it one step further by ordering reusable produce bags from Amazon to eliminate even more plastic! -
Kayla Szumski 4/18/2020 12:43 PMI never realized how many of my everyday meals were vegetarian until I started doing this challenge. It has also taught me a lot about how even what I chose to eat impacts the environment. -
Kayla Szumski 4/18/2020 12:40 PMJust sent an email to some campus officials to advocate for plastic free packaging and the elimination of plastic bags at FGCU. Even though I was hidden behind my screen, I still got nervous about what to say. However, after I sent the email it felt good to put effort towards an important cause! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Kayla Szumski 4/14/2020 3:27 PMThe unknown and the mysterious have always provoked fear in people. however there is so much to discover and observe. Developing a relationship with the earth and its creatures allows us to expand our emotions to things other than ourselves. Implications may be a lack of empathy and respect for the environment in ways of life. Future of development for these indoor cultures most likely don't have the earth's best interest. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Kayla Szumski 4/14/2020 3:21 PMSocial distancing can be really hard for some. I personally cope with anxiety and know how isolation can easily let illnesses like that spiral. Its good to talk to others about our emotions and let them out rather than stay bottled up. Also, it can just be comforting to hear a familiar voice and laugh with an old friend during these uncertain times. We are all human and all going through this, if we look out for one another things will be better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Kayla Szumski 4/14/2020 3:17 PMVolunteering is a great way to give back to your community. It gets you involved in something bigger than yourself. For my 10 hours of service, I fashioned recycled plastic grocery bags into plarn, plastic-yarn. This plarn is then made into sleeping mats for the homeless. Not only do I get to give to people in need, but being in this project helps me practice sustainability and better the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kayla Szumski 4/14/2020 3:14 PMPicking up litter shows you the physical impact humans are bestowing on the earth. It made me feel more connected and responsible for taking care of the planet. Seeing the trash lying around brought on guilt and gave me a purpose.
