REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Andy Behr 5/01/2020 8:22 AMI'm not a very spiritual person by nature, but I do think there's something to the quote. I know with the time we've spent exploring new places with the kids does seem kind of magical...we're finding a place that (even if its only in our minds) has never been explored before. I do think that's important...our culture is all of us in our community, not what's in our walls, so even doing this during a social distancing, it's important to a greater sense of belonging in your community -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Andy Behr 5/01/2020 8:09 AMI'll be the first to admit that I don't pay any attention to this. I've been lazy and usually rely on my wife (who does the vast majority of the grocery shopping!) and I know she pays attention. Not an excuse, obviously, but as I've been doing more of the shopping this was super helpful research into understand how to make better choices when at the store. The biggest step? Honestly, it's just paying attention! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Andy Behr 4/26/2020 4:41 PMAwful challenge to pick during a pandemic! I picked this again in the hope it would be become another habit but obviously its it's been tough to remember it and to remember gloves to make it doable. But actually remembering to do it does form a bit of a connection to my neighborhood...you know your improving your street or block or parks for everyone-
Tiffany Porter 4/28/2020 5:35 AMIt also protects our watershed! Thanks 4th grade science lesson!

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Andy Behr 4/26/2020 4:39 PMHonestly probably another cheat...I haven't used disposable cups in a while even going as far to request the same glass at bars or taking my mug with me to the offices cafe. Really it was mostly a matter of making it a habit...if for example I walked to the cafe I would force myself to walk back for my mug. Doing that really just made it part of my routine -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Andy Behr 4/26/2020 4:36 PMThis quarantine has been good at forcing us to find alternatives to our normal play time outside. To avoid people, we are staying off of playgrounds and trails and instead finding side trails or ways to get to areas (rocks, streams, etc) that we have never explored before. We're finding all sorts of new places to go and its really opened up the area in ways I didnt know where possible -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Andy Behr 4/23/2020 6:22 AMAgain, I'm probably cheating a bit with this challenge as we've been composting for over a year now. We're also lucky...our city has a great composting program and it's very easy for us to drop this off while picking up our order at the farmers market each week. Before we were actually more seasoned at this, however, we learned that a simple way to make use of your compost was to dig a hole in a garden, drop in your compost, chop it up with a shovel, and bury it. The food waste decomposes in the ground, and offers nutrients to the existing plants. Super easy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Andy Behr 4/23/2020 6:18 AMThis challenge is kind of an easy one with the pandemic. Pretty much the only time I use my car is for essential trips, and that's basically 100% runs to the farmers market or grocery store. But for any small trips, I've been trying to bike up to the store more, and have replaced my normal commute with jogs. Obviously way more enjoyable...it feels good to actually get out and get fresh air each day.
