learn more about Coronavirus, Climate Adaptation, and a Resilient Tomorrow
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
CCL Call Participation
I will call at least 20 people to encourage them to tune in to the monthly national Citizens' Climate Lobby call featuring National Sinnett of the Environmental Voter Project.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 10 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 5 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Anne Brueckner 4/21/2020 6:26 PMEven when (if) my 'normally' very busy community life resumes, I hope (and plan) to make time each day for outdoor contemplation of our natural world, which encourages me to continue to work toward our Citizens' Climate Lobby goal of putting a price on carbon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Anne Brueckner 4/21/2020 6:16 PMI find myself surprised at the extent to which my overall sense of well-being is increased by spending time outdoors (daily), either on my own in a reflective manner or with a friend, especially in a scenic environment. I hope I will continue to allocate more of my 'free' time to the outdoors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Anne Brueckner 4/19/2020 12:56 PMWe will destroy our world or it will destroy us. Actually, Mother Nature always wins out ultimately, so we would and up destroying ourselves.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Anne Brueckner 4/16/2020 10:40 AMI realize that I need to pay attention to the latest Consumer Guide for my state on seafoodwatch.org. For example, here in NY my best choices would include US farmed shrimp, NZ salmon(!), farmed scallops. For MA, where I spend July, we're fine eating our local clams, bass and bluefish. I should also carry a mini-guide when I go out to eat so I can check on where a restaurant sources its seafood.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Anne Brueckner 4/16/2020 10:22 AMKoalas are actually marsupials, not bears, and live in eucalyptus trees -- seating only leaves. They're bigger than I thought -- 25"-30", sleep as much as 19 hours a day, and have a life span of about 20 years. They have six 'opposable thumbs,' which helps them in / out of their tree homes. They actually live only one koala per tree. Sadly, their population has declined by about 90% over less than the past 10 years. As farms are developed, trees are cut down and roads are built. They are victims of disease, road traffic, pet dogs -- and they live in only a narrow crescent of land along Australia's east coast. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Anne Brueckner 4/15/2020 5:29 PMMy life (at 77 years old) has never been more purposeful through my involvements in my local community. Following almost 40 years of professional life in NYC, I found a new life in a more rural community, connecting with neighbors and signing on with 5-10 non-profit, community-centered organizations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Anne Brueckner 4/15/2020 5:26 PMIn these times requiring social distancing, I've gotten involved with several phone banks and have expanded my awareness of the home environments of others. I encourage others to do the same: find out about outreach opportunities in your towns, and join in! You will be amply rewarded. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Anne Brueckner 4/15/2020 8:53 AMSea plants produce 70% of the oxygen we breathe (rainforests contributing an other 28%). The ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen and stores 50 times
more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. Support fishery ecosystem planning efforts! -
Anne Brueckner 4/15/2020 8:34 AMCheck out Terrapass and consider their promo: For every pound of personal, business, or event carbon offsets purchased online with the promo code EARTH through Thursday, April 30, 2020, terrapass will purchase and retire an equal amount of carbon offsets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Anne Brueckner 4/13/2020 10:38 AMI can support sustainable farming practices here in the Hudson Valley and the Conservation Foundation in Nantucket, where I spend part of my summers.
