Sarah's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 60 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 5 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Sarah Burke 4/22/2020 10:37 AMBy supporting local businesses more money stays in your local community to help it prosper. For each dollar you spend at a local business returns 3x more money to the local economy compared to a dollar spent at a chain store.-
Marjie Wolfe 4/23/2020 12:52 AMWe are choosing more and more small local businesses when we shoo too.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Sarah Burke 4/22/2020 10:31 AMEach year I work to implement a new sustainable habit. This year I have been working to be more purposeful in supporting local businesses as much as I can. Life has become to easy by buying things on Amazon so I am working to make a conscious effort in supporting the local stores in the area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Sarah Burke 4/13/2020 8:58 AMOn of my favorite sushi items is Yellowfin Tuna. I am happy to see that it is listed as a "Best Choice" (West/Central Pacific). However, some Yellowfin is listed as an "Avoid". Unfortunately, most restaurants don't list where the get their fish, so it is hard to know which you are getting. I am going to focus more on making sure to ask and/or frequent locations that know and are willing the share that information with their customers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Sarah Burke 4/07/2020 7:14 AMThere are small changes that people can make at home that can lead to big water savings such as rain barrels and low-flow features. As a large community/region, there is movement addressing resiliency: East Central Florida Regional Resiliency Collaborative...which gives me great hope that water issues will be addressed on a large scale along with other areas to make our region more resilient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Sarah Burke 4/06/2020 8:58 PMWe need to be more aware of water issues here...while we are surrounded by water there are many issues to be concerned with. In particular, more attention needs to be placed on saltwater intrusion into our groundwater. While sea level rise will effect our coastlines tremendously, a bigger danger is the saltwater easily getting into our groundwater (which is a drinking water source). We need to start curbing our GHG emissions today (to limit the amount of sea level rise) but also investing in technologies to protect our groundwater. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Sarah Burke 4/06/2020 7:15 AMUsing other means of transportation, such as public transit, opens you up to socializing with people that you normally would not. By walking and biking you can explore new places and not feel so isolated. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Sarah Burke 4/04/2020 1:02 PMI try to unplug all no-essential electronics when not in use since on average 10-20% of your electric usage is on phantom energy. Also, I set back my thermostat when I am not at home and keep lights off as much as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Sarah Burke 4/03/2020 7:35 AMBeing able to stay connected with everyone has been helpful so I know my loved ones are safe (particularly since they are so far away). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Sarah Burke 4/02/2020 12:29 PMWhen you are out in nature you are able to see and feel that you are part of something much bigger. Our daily lives, which mainly happen indoors, isolate us from the larger world and we forget that we are a small part of a large system.-
Marjie Wolfe 4/02/2020 5:36 PMI agree, it is much easier to see we are part of something big and wonder-filled when we get out on the other side of our buildings.
