Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

I just noticed that the current first place team in the competition is Asheville High school!  There are a lot of schools in the ecochallenge, and I'm just happy to see my local community engaged.  This lockdown has made me even more appreciative of what this town has to offer.

I realize that I have been forgetful about checking in because I have already incorporated changes from past challenges.  I'm committing to make a better attempt in this final week to go above what I am used to doing and see what else I can add!

My county is doing a "thing" this year where they are giving out 2 trees to residents to plant on their property.  Originally we were to pickup our trees last week, but now they will be delivering to my  home.  I'm excited to have a (Black Gum (Tupelo)) tree to plant in my yard.  In other yardwork news, we now have a garden plot approximately 6 x 20 ft. and will be planting vegetables / pollinators this week!

These past few weeks, it has been fairly easy to avoid single-use plastics.  My household trash has been about the same, although I'm still amazed at the overuse of plastic packaging on food items.  One change I noticed is that grocery store clerks will not bag in reusable bags brought from home.  I usually bag my own groceries, so isn't a problem for me, but wonder if some people are choosing to use more plastic bags to minimize risk of virus transition.
