Erin's actions
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 3 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 5 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 7:45 AMI am more aware of the litter itself. Now after picking up litter in the park I walk in, I feel more connected to keeping it clean and safe for the wildlife. I have taken more pride in keeping a cleaner community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 7:44 AMWe take for granted the convenience of packaged meat in the grocery stores. However, agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, using way too much water for agriculture, and raising animals only for slaughter. Not to mention, they release more methane into the atmosphere. -
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:41 AMI’m killing this daily action stuff! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:39 AMIt was amazing to see the trash then not see it once the area was clean. I participated in the Great American Cleanup last year, and I helped clean three parks and an area beneath the interstate. You have no idea how much trash gets thrown out of vehicles until you’ve cleaned around the roads! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:37 AMI’m most concerned about how we aren’t seeming to grasp and understand the magnitude of our bad habits. People don’t believe there is an issue in the United States because we don’t live with the real tangible issues other countries face like shortage of clean water, dying species, deforestation in a rainforest. We take all the conveniences for granted and it makes it harder to switch to eco friendly things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:34 AMOceans provide habitats for marine life. The oceans provide oxygen we breathe. One of the biggest things humans can do to take care of the oceans is to stop using single use plastics, stop littering, stop dredging and stop harmful chemicals from being dumped into our oceans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Support Organic Growing MethodsIt is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:32 AMWell we once didn’t have all the options to exist either and we managed to survive this long. As we evolved so did our knowledge and actions but we lost sight of using what the earth provides. If we focused more on being sustainable then we probably wouldn’t be in much of the predicament we are in now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:29 AMI actually am allergic to fish so we don’t consume it at all. We do sometimes eat shrimp. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:26 AMI try to avoid single use plastics daily. I carry around reusable bags, reusable straws and cutlery and reusable bottle. I also don’t use ziplock bags and bring my own reusable food container when we go to restaurants (for left overs). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Erin Husbands 4/07/2020 5:21 AMIf pollinators don’t exist, then neither do we. We rely on them to pollinate crops and flowers. But due to pesticides, we are killing them off instead of providing more food and safety for them. Plants flowers and trees. Don’t kill the bees. And bees are NOT the only pollinators so learn more about how other insects or animals help keep our planet surviving.
