I researched more about the sea otter, cause they are my favorite animal!  Once I did some digging, I realized how cool of a creature they are. They have one of the densest coats of fur, helping them with insulation in the ocean.  They wrap themselves in kelp to keep from floating out deeper into the ocean when sleeping, and the carry around a favorite rock or shell they use to crack open and eat their prey! A pretty cool animal :)

    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

I never knew about the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and how important this process is to our climate and the world,  The transporting of nutrients, temperature, salts, etc. through the ocean is detrimental to coastal environments.  The lack of glacial freshwater entering the oceans each year may lead to extreme climatic changes.  It's amazing how this process occurs, and that it supports most life on earth without people even realizing it,

    Fresh Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

In this area, I think there is a large amount of over-consumption of water through utilities (i.e. flushing toilets, showers, sinks).  To help make this a more sustainable system, I would provide incentives to households and small businesses that cut back on their water usage.  Further, implementing shorter running times on automatic sinks and using gray water for public restrooms would be simple solutions to this issue.

Being quarantined has given all of us a great opportunity to connect with loved ones, have a mental break, and pursue activities that we used to not have time for,  Many of the challenges I chose to participate in were based on education and research,  They are things I would love to learn more about, and now I have the time to do it :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

I enjoy connecting with my family and friends because it helps me vent and makes me feel more positive throughout my day.  I am missing my friends a lot right now, so having the ability to chat with them and see their faces makes me so appreciative.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Most of the times I have felt connected to nature, and therefor more connected to myself and my being is when I have been outside for longer periods of time (or more frequently).  I believe it has made me more aware of the details, more aware of the beauty and simplicity in life, and in turn more receptive of information.  The more I reflect and participate in regular tasks outdoors, the more clearheaded I feel.  It is easier to understand various opinions, have empathy, and be able to critically think about typical processes in society.
