Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Chris Kane 4/30/2020 3:45 PMIt's been a wonderful challenge! -
Chris Kane 4/29/2020 5:17 PMHard to believe tomorrow is the last day for our 2020 earthday ecochallenge; i hope everyone enjoyed it as much as i did - i very much appreciate all the work the staff did on this challenge. Stay safe everyone! -
Chris Kane 4/28/2020 7:36 PMI can't believe we're almost done with this event - it's been perfect timing for me - i've learned a lot, as i always do. -
Chris Kane 4/27/2020 3:33 PMToday I was filled with joy because i spent so much time in the garden; it brought me to thinking about the future of the planet and all the different things that we could be doing to help avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change; education - education - education -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Chris Kane 4/27/2020 2:26 AMThe most important thing we can do is to spread the word about what's happening. When I first read about Nestle' i was stunned; i couldn't believe something like that could happen; i brought it up in discussions with my friends and acquaintances and realized no one knew about this - that was several years ago - and still, today, i find way too many people don't know. Education is the primary force in this. The more people who know the more people who can do something. This is the most bizarre practice i've heard of in terms of water - "when you know better, you do better" -
Chris Kane 4/26/2020 5:58 PMUnfortunately I've been distracted the past three days; i haven't been sleeping well which isn't helping either, but i seem to be getting back on track now; i'm surprised it took me this long to let everything throw me off my game, but that's behind me now. I'm so grateful for the challenges and for my friends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Chris Kane 4/24/2020 1:16 AMI've been working very hard at not printing online articles. I'm old school and like to hold paper in my hands to read. I find reading things on the computer very tiring on my eyes but i have to find a compromise in order to conserve paper. I would say that i've cut down printing articles by 50% right now and to me that's huge. It does take me a lot, a whole lot, longer to read but luckily i'm retired and have time. How do i ensure i'm successful in accomplishing this new habit? I remind myself before i hit the print button. For a while I had a note on my computer reminding me, but now i found i don't need it any longer. I automatically don't print any article less than 2 pages, and articles over that, depending on their use, It's not that it's difficult for me to remember, it's that it's difficult for me to read. IN any event, i feel like i've created a new habit and that i'll be able to stick to it.-
Sarah Friedman 4/24/2020 3:45 AMI have stopped buying shampoos, shaving cream, body soap, dish soap, toothpaste in bottles and use soap bars and toothpaste in glass jars that I can get at my grocery store.. Here is a link to read more about package free soaps https://citizensustainable.com/soap-bars/

Chris Kane 4/24/2020 12:44 AMThis was a bittersweet day for me - I've always been out and about on Earth Day attending events and celebrating with other people. I did do a lot this year, but it was at home and i was alone. I think this was the first day that I really felt the impact of sheltering in place-
Mary Dru Bowman 4/24/2020 8:25 AMEven though I was able to walk on the beach, I felt the same way. I look forward to Earth Day like some people do Thanksgiving. I'm usually with good friends, making positive impacts. This EcoChallenge helped.

Chris Kane 4/21/2020 7:16 PMthis is so much fun; i need things for a diversion from the boredom that's finally beginning to set in; it's been almost 6 weeks now for us.....this is perfect timing for me to be working on this and several other events - thank you ecochallenge.org -
Chris Kane 4/20/2020 5:05 AMStrange how things seem to come together; the other day i did the initial training for the pachamama organization and they're very involved in the drawdown movement! what a coincidence; i'm still working diligently at being more mindful in everything i do, particularly as it pertains to my earth day eco challenges - earth day has always been important to me and it always will be
