Katrina's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
People
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Forests
Researching Trees & Plants
Spend time outside and learn the names/characteristics of trees and plants in my community and forests near Pittsburgh.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate
Purchase reusable silicon sandwich bags to replace single-use bags.
I want to reduce the single-use plastic I use, and will investigate alternates and purchase a reusable option.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Katrina Nieveen 4/24/2020 12:19 PMDuring the quarantine, I have found that even a short walk outside can be very refreshing and relieve stress. Especially in this Spring weather, getting outside a few times a day has been a highlight. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Katrina Nieveen 4/07/2020 9:35 AMGrowing up in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, its very difficult to run errands, get to work/school, etc. without a car. One of my favorite parts of living in Shadyside is that I can walk to obtain all my groceries, use public transportation to get into work, walk to my health/dentist appointments, walk to the library, and generally use my car very infrequently. If a destination is within a few miles, I plan around good weather and I walk!
