Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Rose Reiner 4/18/2020 2:52 PMWhere I am right now, it is peak transmission for COVID-19, so my family is not going to the grocery store for 3 weeks. We did one big shop at the grocery store, and planned out all of our meals. This has decreased our food waste significantly.-
Rose Reiner 4/30/2020 9:35 AMYes, my family does have a compost! We also are going to use it in our garden:) -
Laurie Husted 4/30/2020 5:32 AMNice - menu planning is key. Do you have space for a home compost system? There’s always an inedible rind left no matter how careful you are to avoid waste. We’re hoping to use our compost to plant some food this year - wish I had flipped it more like the compost team at Bard does!
