City Nature Challenge
Help the Omaha-Metro Area compete against more than 160 cities across the globe for the title of "the most biodiverse city" during the City Nature Challenge on Friday, April 24th through Monday, April 27th! As a community, we will explore the great outdoors in search of as many plant and animal species as we can find and record our observations using mobile devices. Participate is easy! All you have to do: 1. Find wildlife. It can be any plant, animal, fungi, slime mold or other evidence of life, such as scat, fur, tracks, shells, and carcasses found anywhere in the Omaha Metro Area 2. Take a picture of what you find. Be sure to note the location of the plant or critter. 3. Share your observations. Upload your findings through iNaturalist. Download the free iNaturalist app on Apple's App Store or Google Play for Android. https://www.inaturalist.org/

Fresh Water
Conserve water by taking short showers or delaying
Showering uses about 25 gallons of water, on average. I will make an effort to take shorter, more efficient showers, as well as using them sparingly since I'm home alone anyway. Plus it gives you that nice, natural musk.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 7 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Roger Sandhoefner 4/21/2020 6:07 AMI left some pieces of bread out on my balcony for the birds, since I can't eat the whole loaf before it goes bad... several birds and even a squirrel showed up. I learned that bread is not good for birds or squirrels, the sugar, and most of them cannot even digest it (though they'll still eat it). I've since bought some peanuts and mixed seeds for them, and placed a few dishes in an old wagon so they don't make a mess. The squirrel comes on schedule and stuffs his face for about an hour. He seems to like black oil sunflower seeds and peanuts the most. There are several species of birds that I've identified and researched, including blue jays, cardinals, grackles, pigeons, robins, and swallows. It's actually quite interesting to observe them, as well as to learn about their lives, calls, and behaviors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate MCC SustainabilityWhat in the report was new or surprised you?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/09/2020 12:59 PMIt surprised me that MCC printed 4.5 million pages, equal to 57 trees! When in the office, I do have 2 monitors, so that motivates me to try to use both screens more efficiently, instead of printing something to refer to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/08/2020 7:38 AMI just started having a problem with wasps on my apartment balcony. I then discovered a nest in the closet. I researched about how to get rid of them, for my own safety. I discovered there are over 30,000 species of wasps. They tend to leave you alone, but they are very territorial, and can sting you multiple times. I also learned that one way to deter them is the put up a fake wasp net, indicating that another colony has already claimed the spot. They are minor pollinators, and also help to eradicate other insects, such as potentially poisonous spiders. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/03/2020 10:24 AMJust talking to someone, whether on the phone, text messaging, or through social media gives your mind a break, and offers reassurance that you're not the only one having a difficult time with this situation.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/03/2020 5:00 PMHi Roger, I'm working from home solo and I'm the captain of my Ecochallenge team. The Ecochallenge is a great way for me to connect with my coworkers, and with other folk out there like you! Keep calm & carry on.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/01/2020 6:14 PMNot flushing the toilet everytime and not showering everyday (sorry coworkers...). People didn't bathe everyday, or multiple times per day, for thousands of years. It also strips your skin of it's oils, which, for people with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis (I have psoriasis, it's awesome...) continues to dehydrate their skin. Also, things like washing your car wastes gallons of water. And that neighbor spraying down their driveway??? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/01/2020 6:12 PMJust because something is "past the date(s)" does not mean it is not edible, if needed, or that it's nutrients are greatly reduced. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the world, or even homeless in Omaha, that would gladly eat expired food with no qualms at all.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/03/2020 4:55 PMI shop at my local health food store and adopt as many "orphans" as I can use - those "orphans" are the canned & packaged goods that have gone past their use by or best by dates. No one else wants to buy them, but they are still good! -
Joy Baade 4/02/2020 7:29 AMMy niece will not touch anything that has a past date on it. Doesn't matter to her if its use by, sell by or best by. Drives me insane. We've discussed these dates multiple times and she refuses to understand them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/01/2020 6:25 AMSetting AC and furnace temperatures conservatively, turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use to prevent "vampire drain", choosing fuel efficient (or electric) vehicles, and just being conscientious about emissions in general. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/01/2020 6:18 AMSure, it might make the toilet bowl dirtier and harder to clean, but it saves a ton of water by not flushing every time. And it's not that big of a deal.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/03/2020 4:49 PMIf you're up for it, here's a link on how to make your own toilet bowl cleaner. :-)

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Roger Sandhoefner 4/01/2020 6:15 AMI usually don't think twice about picking up some coffee from the local gas station, but I have several reusable mugs/cups. I'm sure the gas station wouldn't mind if I brought and used my own cup, I'd still pay for the coffee. -
Roger Sandhoefner 3/31/2020 12:20 PMLED bulbs are great. I learned about them in college several years ago, but technology has now advanced to the point where LED bulbs can be found for nearly any fixture, wattage, and color temperature. They are also priced competitively with standard bulbs. They produce nearly no heat, use a small percentage of power while producing the same light output, and have a much longer useful life than standard bulbs. They are also a lot of fun with colors: I was able to power over 15 separate LED fixtures off of one 15 amp circuit breaker with no tripping of the breaker- something that could not be done with traditional bulbs.
