Emily's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 5 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 4 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
People
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Emily Kane 4/30/2020 12:24 PMIt has been warm enough to use my clothes line the last week or so. It feels good to get outside and not use the dryer as much. Every little bit helps!

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Emily Kane 4/30/2020 10:06 AMSince the challenge began I'm much more aware of my food purchases and ensuring I eat it all before it goes bad. Additionally, I've taken advantage of my compost pile and place any food scraps in there to breakdown.-
Scott Royael 4/30/2020 12:13 PMHi Emily,
I am definitely more aware of food waste. We started composting for this challenge, so I am much more in tune with how much we are wasting.

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Emily Kane 4/30/2020 10:03 AMPlanting trees is a very tiring process. I was very exhausted after planting so many trees. It helps mental and spiritual health by allowing me to get outside and experience/connect with nature. I was more aware of my surroundings and observed many plants I never usually notice and 7 deer running through the field. -
Emily Kane 4/23/2020 8:46 AMLast night, National Geographic aired a fantastic documentary on Jane Goodall to highlight her career and the impact she has made in the conservation field. The documentary is called Jane Goodall: The Hope and can be streamed on Disney Plus. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/tv/shows/jane-goodall-the-hope/video/most-recent/vdka17462323 -

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Emily Kane 4/21/2020 7:22 AMI've done research on this in the past, so I was aware of what to avoid, but I didn't realize how many foods use these ingredients (palm oil is in so many things!). That did make it more difficult, but it's certainly doable with a little extra time/attention. -
Emily Kane 4/20/2020 6:13 AMEcological Landscape Alliance has a lot of great, free webinars every Wednesday at 12 noon. I can't watch them during the day, but if you register before the webinar begins, they will email you the presentation to watch at a later time. https://www.ecolandscaping.org/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Emily Kane 4/19/2020 5:36 PMLast week I watched a webinar about pollinators through the Ecological Landscape Alliance. https://www.ecolandscaping.org/ It was a very informative webinar. I learned that pollinators are responsible for much of the world's food. Without them, many food groups would be eliminated. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Emily Kane 4/19/2020 5:30 PMIt has been difficult to spend more time inside lately. Going outside after work is done to do yard work has helped me to feel more productive and healthy. On days when I can't get outside until later, I've noticed an impact on my mood and I feel more tired.
