Gabryella's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 5 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/28/2020 7:01 AMSince working in the stormwater unit I feel really strongly against littering right now. I think it is because it is something so preventable but yet humans feel the need to just throw things on the street.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/28/2020 5:54 PMI can't understand why people continue to litter. When I was a kid in the 1970s I thought the crying Indian commercial would make people stop littering. Sadly, it didn't. {:-(

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/28/2020 6:57 AMI am extrovert by nature and not being able to see people in person has been really hard for me. But it allows me to connect with people who I love the most and still get emotional support from them. It also allows for me to be there for others if I can not be there in person. We are social beings and we need to be there for each other in this time of need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/23/2020 5:47 PMThis quote by Rachel Carlson I love so much as the outdoors is such a huge mood booster. During this time being able to go outside and embrace nature when I can’t go to the park is so important.-
Louisa Lubiak 4/24/2020 6:36 PMYeah Gabby, I'm with you on that one!

Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/22/2020 3:09 PMI went on a nice walk today to celebrate earth day. Wish we could be together to celebrate but I guess will we do it once we can safely. -
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/19/2020 8:38 PMIt was such a nice day out today! Cleaned up my yard some. -
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/16/2020 6:34 AMI find myself trying to limit my electricity use in my house and try to limit my carbon footprint in my house. Also trying to keep my heat low if I need and just have a sweatshirt on or a blanket. However it is so easy to be lazy and not move as the state of the world but I am trying to just go out on walks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/16/2020 6:21 AMI watched a documentary about a Indian tribe called Tolowa Dee-Ni' in California about food sovereignty about fishing off the coast. It was interesting to see how food sovereignty ties in the rights of the land and practices going on for many years, They show that they treat the ocean with such care and only take what they need and leave the strong adults and babies to continue to grow. IT shows the current fishing practices and other practices we do are killing the oceans and we need to change the fishing world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/14/2020 8:18 AMWithout them we literally will have no food or flowers or anything. They help keep us alive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/14/2020 7:22 AMOne of the ways I am trying to limit my carbon emissions and I am trying to use the least amount of electricity I can.Such as not turning on my lights if it is light outside or turning off my heat.
I am renovating my house right now so I am trying to go as efficient as possible as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Gabryella Pulsinelli 4/14/2020 7:19 AMSo I know way to much about delocalization and this topic of how my actions affect people across the topic. Everything I do turning on my lights, using water, down to what I eat and even typing on my computer has a consequence. However, I do not think about it as I do not see the consequences across the globe. So I have to learn how to live sustainable I do not damage others.
