Supporting local business helps ensure that diverse businesses and stores are accessible to the community, makes the community more self-reliant, and cuts down on transportation and related energy consumption and cost. It also creates healthy human connection toons.

I explained to a contractor why I don't want to use poison in my yard--this helps prevent birds, insects, and other creatures up the food chain from being harmed or killed by it (either ingesting it themselves or eating a creature that ingested it).

I researched native plants so I can include more of them in my yard to help feed birds and insects (and learned that I should avoid native cultivars, since they don't help the way true natives do).
