Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

During the quarantine, I have found that even a short walk outside can be very refreshing and relieve stress. Especially in this Spring weather, getting outside a few times a day has been a highlight.

    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I find it most difficult to use reusable coffee cups while traveling or commuting to work. I have purchased a reusable mug that I keep at my office for use while at work.

This was a really interesting exercise for me, because I hadn't thought a lot about biodiversity before and the real impact it has on every one of us.

I've really been enjoying the challenge so far - it's giving me a reason to get outside every day, and I'm realizing that it's pretty easy to pick up a couple pieces of litter every day, and it helps me give back to my community.

Growing up in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, its very difficult to run errands, get to work/school, etc. without a car. One of my favorite parts of living in Shadyside is that I can walk to obtain all my groceries, use public transportation to get into work, walk to my health/dentist appointments, walk to the library, and generally use my car very infrequently. If a destination is within a few miles, I plan around good weather and I walk!

    People Spend Time Outside

Wikipedia calls it "Nature Deficit Disorder" - the idea that human beings are spending less time outdoors which results in a wide range of health and behavioral problems. It also disconnects us from our humanness and leads us to care less about the world we live in. In rare occasions, like this COVID-19 pandemic, we do help society by staying indoors, but the struggles we are all facing to socially distance should remind us about the importance of being outside, and not just from our homes, but our offices, factories, and gyms too.
