Evelyn's actions
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 8 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
People
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Evelyn Weed-Quick 4/14/2020 4:56 PMGood, today I posted some free items on the Nextdoor app. -
Evelyn Weed-Quick 4/13/2020 12:46 PMI have questions. When I go to Our team page I see accomplishments, like, 90 mins spend outdoors today, and so many plastic bottles saved. And so on. How do I get points for those things. I do most of them regularly.-
Chris Kane 4/16/2020 6:03 AMjust add them to your actions, evelyn. you most certainly should be getting points for doing that. If you don't see what i mean let me know. sorry i didn't see this before.

Evelyn Weed-Quick 4/13/2020 12:38 PMI’m so sorry that I missed a few days of the Eco Challenge. It’s been so difficult with the lockdown in place. I have been using social networking to promote restaurants that are ocean friendly and use sustainable options. I intend on creating a friendly post to welcome more local restaurants into the “Litter Quitter” program. I just need to get out of this funk. “Corona Virus go away!”-
Chris Kane 4/16/2020 6:05 AMyou're doing an amazing job, evelyn! you're obviously using your time very well. I'd love to have you on our "drawdown" team - name of team is 2020 RECYCLE BREVARD. -
Deborah Kim (Ecochallenge.org Staff) 4/13/2020 1:55 PMThat's amazing, Evelyn! 🌷

Evelyn Weed-Quick 4/08/2020 2:59 PMThis stupid virus is a real thorn in my side, but I’m doing what I can. I put out over 30 containers, (that I rescued from the dump) of plants to share in my community. I’m thrilled to see how many neighbors are turning to gardening to help get through this time. They were picking them up as fast as I could put them out there.-
Chris Kane 4/16/2020 6:07 AMi wish i lived next door to you! I've seen it myself - many more people are taking up gardening right now. It's so good for the soul.

Marcia Booth 4/09/2020 1:22 PMIt's on my list! I have been growing some vegetables and need to transplant them in the bed that needs some cleaning up. Maybe it will be this weekend's job :-) -

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Support A Sharing EconomyWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Evelyn Weed-Quick 4/02/2020 9:15 AMI have 4 family members with their own homes here on Merritt Island and we share everything. 4 times less things that will need to be made and eventually end up at the landfill. This is almost an everyday practice for us.
I start a family garden.-
Chris Kane 4/07/2020 1:59 AMthat's terrific, evelyn! i often wondered if any families actually really did that so i'm particularly happy to know that yours does. I have no family here; i've tried to do something like that with neighbors but they're not interested. Great work -
