Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

As I walk in new places to help my mind fill with the wonders of new discoveries, I am reminded that we still have much work to do. In addition to the doggie poop bags that are always with me, I now carry a larger bag to pick up extra trash along the way. The trash has always been there but I notice it more now. Perhaps staying home is making me extra mindful of the beauty of the great outdoors. I find that the parks are extremely clean but the neighborhoods and places where we live and work are still littered with cans, food cartons, etc. As you go on your neighborhood walks, (and I hope you do at least once a day) please notice and respond to the garbage around you that you may not have seen before. New eyes wide open.....

This month started with noticing and ended with a big mother daughter tire cleanup! So  a good month for our roads at least
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Connecting virtually is a life line during these challenging times. There are five people dear to me that are alone and checking in daily helps us all get through and eases isolation! Everyone let’s check in with those we know are alone and learn new things about each other! Love a good virtual meal or scrabble!

Connecting with organizers and climate justice activists keeps me engaged with the current crises; the climate crisis but also the current pandemic which has caused millions of people being unemployed, and it makes me feel like I do something to try and help the situation.

in addition to others=people, I've found connecting with animals has been really helpful.  Keeping my bird feeders full has attracted red headed woodpeckers and a bright yellow bird who I've learned is probably the American Goldfinch.  So while I'm inside I'm also feeling connected to them.  On the rainy nights we've had, I've enjoyed helping amphibians cross the road.  And I think I've heard an owl!

Red Hook Responds is a new community resource to respond to COVID 19 in the community. Happy to be involved and encourage others to do so too!

Since coming home from Bard I've been lucky to continue our Sustainability Office work remotely, but I've also started volunteering at the food pantry in my town. Food pantries are under high stress right now because of the amount of people who are losing their jobs and the number of volunteers who are sick or in quarantine. Our pantry does food recovery, which means they take donations of food from grocery stores and other businesses that would've gone bad and been thrown out otherwise. This practice prevents thousands of tons of food from being wasted and gives back to struggling people in our community. This work is a beautiful example of how environmental advocacy done right also fights poverty and inequality. I love doing it because I feel I'm continuing the work we do at Bard in my own community and getting a chance to meet pantry clients and volunteers who are acting with such resilience and grace in this difficult time.

Our volunteer community is so strong; they are rising to this challenge as well.  Great to learn that it was initiated by a local business owner and a team of young Red Hookers.  Red Hook Responds

    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Time outside is more important than ever. Even the rain earlier this week didn't stop me!

love a warm spring rain, and this time of year, after dark, it brings out amphibians migrating to their temporary woodland pools!

Virtual work from home has its advantages! I'm not driving and enjoying walking in quiet spaces as spring unfolds. Green leaves budding on the trees and flowers poppping up everywhere
